Interstitial Cystitis

Interstitial Cystitis, also known as Bladder Pain Syndrome (BPS), is characterized by frequent, urgent urination and pain in the bladder or pelvis. Some individuals experience intense pain in the bladder and a need to urinate as much as every ten minutes, while others will only experience tenderness in these regions. Currently the cause of interstitial cystitis remains unknown, however highly caffeinated beverages and physical or mental stress are thought to worsen the condition. Of the estimated 1.3 million Americans affected by interstitial cystitis, 1.2 million are women. Women with this condition tend to experience more intense symptoms during menstruation and intercourse.
