Herman & Wallace is broadening its neuro offerings with the launch of Neurologic Conditions and Pelvic Floor Rehabilitation, a collaborative course arriving at the end of June 2026. Co-authored by Herman & Wallace faculty member Erica Vitek, MOT, OTR, BCB-PMD, PRPC, the course is built to help pelvic health clinicians confidently "think neuro." Below, Erica shares the story behind the course and what it can bring to your clinic.
When I first co-authored the course Neurologic Conditions and Pelvic Floor Rehab in 2018, the goal was ambitious: help pelvic health clinicians begin to confidently "think neuro." We focused on a deep dive into the pelvic health conditions in people with Parkinson disease, multiple sclerosis, and spinal cord injury. The course was offered in person and then Covid hit in 2020 putting a long pause on general neuro topics. As the stand-alone Parkinson disease and Pelvic Rehabilitation remote on-line live learning course continues to be offered by Herman and Wallace, there have been on-going requests to broaden the neuro course offerings line-up. We are very excited to announce a neuro expert, collaborative effort with the launching of Neurologic Conditions and Pelvic Floor Rehabilitation at the end of June 2026.
There can be a sense of hesitation and uncertainty when a new patient on our schedule has a neurological diagnosis. We may not be confident of where to even begin. Our patients that have been given a neuro diagnosis likely have multiple other comorbidities, are being followed by multiple specialty physicians, and are on many different pharmaceuticals to manage their condition. These patients often present with complex, fluctuating, frequently overlapping symptoms that don't always fit consistently and neatly into traditional evaluation and treatment planning. These patients have often seen multiple therapy providers trying to get help and needing to be understood through a neuro lens.
This course is designed to get you thinking about neuroanatomy and physiology from the ground up and expand on neurologic diagnoses across the lifespan, from pediatrics to adults; from traumatic neurologic injury (such as stroke) to neurodegeneration (such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), transient neurologic conditions (such as Lyme disease) to autonomic nervous system dysfunction (such as POTS), and from neurodiversity (such as autism) to pediatric congenital defects (such as cerebral palsy). Our goal is to offer a practical framework you can carry into any pelvic health neurologic evaluation, so when a complex patient walks into your clinic, you feel confident in your clinical reasoning rather than limited by the diagnosis. Instead, we hope you will feel equipped to ask better questions, see patterns others might have otherwise missed, and develop treatment plans that accurately address the neurologic contributions to pelvic function. We also look to strengthen your clinical reasoning and problem-solving ability to adapt and pivot your treatment approaches when patient outcomes do not progress as you intend or expect.
If you've ever felt like, "I have a neuro patient on my schedule tomorrow and I don't even know where to start", "I know there's a neuro component here, but I'm not sure how to assess it" or "This patient doesn't fit the usual presentation", then this course was designed for you. We hope to help you "think neuro" in ways you have not thought about before, refine your assessment and treatment planning with your "neuro brain", and confidently expand into your role as a neuro-informed pelvic health clinician.
