This three-day continuing education seminar is designed to make the WPATH Standards of Care in the treatment of the gender diverse population come alive, and share groundbreaking physical therapy evaluation and treatment for BOTH trans-men and women, intersex, and non-binary patients! It is geared to any medical professional whose practice involves hands-on evaluation and treatment to the LGBTQIA community.

As gender issues are brought to the forefront more and more frequently, we as providers, struggle with the lack of exposure and training on how to communicate properly with this community, and how sensitive their body issues are. You may have questions, such as: What does it mean to identify as trans, transgender, or as a gender noncomforming individual? Is there truly a difference between gender and sex? How do I address transgender patients? Are special considerations required for their physical evaluations? How do I make sure to have a positive impact?

It can be stressful and uncomfortable, but you aren’t alone. Care for the trans population is an urgent topic for health care providers. This course confronts those uncomfortable topics in an open and supportive space, and provides you with the necessary tools to provide excellent, evidenced-based, reimbursable care. Upon completion of the course, participants will be able to confidently evaluate and treat this patient demographic regardless of where they fall within their continuum of care.

Practitioners can expect engaging lectures, break-out sessions, and labs that implement multi-media to engage all learning styles. Lectures topics include; pre- and post-operative care, specific patient care questions to implement for treatment of the LGBTQIA patient, and ways to encourage optimal wellness. Additionally, attendees will receive customizable forms and patient education materials that can be immediately implemented. Presentations will include not only in-person lectures but also multimedia presentations from leading providers in the fields of surgery, endocrinology, psychology, speech pathology, sex therapy, and social work.

Labs for this course will be diverse, including: an opportunity to practice essential manual therapy techniques for this demographic, the ability to gain an understanding of how anatomy is changed and reoriented in the transition process, and daily guided yoga and meditation practices.

Audience:

This course is for the pelvic rehab therapist who is desiring to treat or currently provides care to transgender, gender non-binary and intersex patients. This course is intended for practitioners who are willing or looking to expand their knowledge and skills to an underserved and often misunderstood demographic. It is applicable to any medical professional whose practice involves hands-on evaluation and treatment to this community. It will cover an introduction of concepts around medical care and understandings of the LGBTQIA community. It is important to also acknowledge that this field is growing and changing, requiring constant review and discussion as we continue to deepen our knowledge and understanding.

Laura Meihofer PT, DPT, ATC, RYT-200

Laura Meihofer

Laura has a very diverse training background that has shaped her approach to physical therapy. Her training began as she earned her Bachelor’s of Science in Athletic Training from Simpson College in Indianola Iowa in 2008. She then attended Mayo Clinic School of Health Sciences in Rochester MN, where she earned her Doctorate of Physical Therapy in 2012. Laura was immediately offered a position working with Mayo Clinic, and focused exclusively on individuals with pelvic floor dysfunction, where she still practices today.

Throughout her years of treating patients, while taking many continuing education courses she felt she needed something more to offer to reach all patients with pelvic floor muscle dysfunction. This led Laura to attain two yoga certifications: Restorative Yoga Level 1 Teacher, and 200-Hour Registered Yoga Teacher. Recently, Laura has expanded her practice online to provide information for both patients and providers via Laura Meihofer LLC: online blog, YouTube, and Instagram. The explanatory posts and videos give instruction and sample modifications for all types of patients. All of her work endeavors to demystify the pelvic floor with a well educated, holistic approach.

Working within a large institution, Laura has had many research and teaching opportunities, and is at home working within a multidisciplinary team. Laura has a rich practice that consists of a high volume of complex patients. She has consistent experience maintaining focus on successfully servicing diverse patients of all gender identities and sexual orientations who suffer from pelvic floor muscle dysfunction.

Outside of work Laura enjoys exploring nature, traveling, and cuddling with her lovable pooch.
