Our patients bring their whole selves into our treatment rooms and clinics.

A patient’s religious beliefs and those of the communities in which they were raised can profoundly impact and shape the way they experience the innerworkings of their bodies, their attitudes and preferences in their own healthcare choices, and their sexuality.

As pelvic health providers we strive to care for all of our patients with professionalism and sensitivity, providing a safe non-judgmental environment for healing. Encountering patients from different cultural and religious backgrounds may be challenging at times for practitioners who are unfamiliar with the religious laws, customs, values, and culture native to their patient. This course is designed to provide guidance and skills for engaging patients from religiously conservative backgrounds in a culturally sensitive manner.

Participants will gain a foundational understanding of the various traditions, customs, laws, and values associated with Muslim, Jewish, Hindu and Christian faiths as they pertain to sexuality and pelvic health.

Prior to the live component of this course, participants will be asked to review prerecorded interviews with experts in each of the faith-based communities covered in this course. The live section of the course will review current research, strategies and skills for culturally sensitive patient interviewing and special considerations during treatment. The course will culminate with discussion and analysis of case studies as well as question and answer sessions guided by the instructor.
