This remote one-day course was developed and is taught by Lauren Mansell, DPT, CLT, PRPC, who worked in counseling/advocacy for sexual assault survivors prior to becoming a physical therapist. This course includes precorded lectures that cover the topics of the medical and legal considerations and PolyVagal response, followed by 3.5 hours of interactive, live content via Zoom meeting. During the Zoom meeting, we will maximize the in-person time with Q&A and case studies. Labs will include Mindful Movement Lab. Participants will have the opportunity to workshop patient case studies in both pairs and a group setting. 

Upon completion of the course, the therapists will be able to bring their increased awareness of trauma for the sexual assualt survivor to the successful, holistic treatment of patients with pelvic pain, sexual dysfunction, bowel dysfunction and bladder dysfunction. Skills and content covered are to increase trauma awareness and ability to provide appropriate physical therapy for trauma survivors and will NOT prepare a physical therapist for any type of counseling or mental health servicing.

Schedule: This short-format remote course will take place from 10:30AM - 1:30PM PST. Three hours of prerecorded lectures will be sent a a week before the meeting. Particpants should view prior to the course and come with questions.

Objectives:

1. Discuss trauma informed care for the sexual assault survivor

2. Define sexual violence

3. Discuss the epidemiology of sexual violence

4. List and describe medical and legal considerations for survivor

5. Identify and describe trauma informed response during patient care

6. Describe techniques for reducing compassion fatigue, secondary trauma and retraumatization

 

Audience:

This continuing education webinar is targeted to physical therapists, occupational therapists, physical therapist assistants, occupational therapist assistants, registered nurses, nurse midwives, and other rehabilitation professionals. Content is not intended for use outside the scope of the learner's license or regulation. Physical therapy continuing education courses should not be taken by individuals who are not licensed or otherwise regulated, except, as they are involved in a specific plan of care.

 

Prerequisites:

Participants should take this course after taking the Trauma Informed Care remote course
